It’s one thing to make sure your new furniture fits nicely in your room of choice but have you thought about how it will get there?

The excitement of falling in love with a new sofa can make you forget all about your narrow hallway or tight staircase but our guide will help you to make sure that you’re not disappointed when the day of delivery finally arrives. In this blog post we will show you how to measure your doorways, hallways and stairway to make sure that your delivery is seamless.

  1. Measure your future furniture

First things first, make sure you know the measurements of your furniture. If you're buying online, the measurements you need (width, depth and height) will be in the product description. If you are buying in-store, ask the Sales Person for the exact dimensions of the piece you're buying. If you have a particularly tight entryway, it would also be useful to know the diagonal depth as this will help to determine whether your furniture can be brought in at an angle.

Some pieces, like large sofas and corner sofas, will be delivered in parts and there may also be the option to remove the arms, legs and back cushions. If you need to know the individual measurements, please click here to contact us.

2. Plan your access route

If you're having a sofa delivered into your living room or a bed frame delivered to an upstairs bedroom, you need to start by thinking about how you'd get there. If you've got a couple of options, map out both routes so you can take measurements and see what's best.

3. Measure your doorways and hallways

Measure the height (A) and width (B) of all the doorways and hallways your piece will need to pass through.

  • The width of the entryway (B) must exceed at least one of the following: the pieces depth, diagonal depth or height.

For narrow entryways and corners, it's also important to measure the total clearance length (C). This is the distance between the outside and interior walls.

  • If the entryway's clearance (C) exceeds the piece's width, the piece can be moved horizontally.
  • If the entryway's clearance (C) is less than the piece's width, the piece needs to be moved vertically. In this case, the entryway's height (A) must exceed the piece's width.

The piece will not fit into your home if:

  • The piece's width exceeds both the entryway's height (A) and clearance (C).
  • The entryway's width (B) is less than all three of the following measurements: the piece's depth, diagonal depth and height.

Remember: Often the legs, arms and back cushions can be removed from sofas. Dining tables almost always have removable legs and wardrobes are often self assembly. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us on 01254 236 262 or get in touch through our website.

Don't forget to take things like radiators, fixed cupboards or shelving and architectural features into consideration. To avoid bumps and scrapes, we recommend removing photo frames and pictures from the walls and also clearing the path of any obstacles such as shoe racks, console tables and sideboards. How to measure for furniture delivery

4. Measure your staircase

Measure the width of your stairs at their narrowest point.

  • The width of the staircase must exceed either the depth or height of the piece.

If the piece needs to be lifted over a banister, measure the distance between the banister and the ceiling.

  • The distance between the banister and the ceiling must be wider than any one of the following three measurements: the piece's depth, diagonal depth or height.
