Knowing where to start when trying to decide on a decorating style can be difficult for even the most interior design savvy of us. Although we may swoon over ‘industrial’ or ‘retro’ interiors in magazines and on Pinterest, it can feel like too much of a statement or a commitment in our own homes.

To help you decide on a decorating style that reflects your personality, we have created a useful guide. Follow our simple steps to design a space that you love absolutely everything about.

  1. Take a look around

We think that your home should be an extension of you. So instead of starting with a restricted style in-mind, start by thinking about individual pieces that you love and why.

As you visit friends’ houses, shops and even restaurants, look around and take note (or photos!) of pieces, materials and colours that you’re naturally drawn to.

Do you stay away from bold colours? Do you love them? Do you love minimal spaces with clean lines? Or are you drawn to shabby chic interiors with lots of accessories?

After a while, you’ll begin to build up a picture of your own personal style.

  1. Colour Palette Moodboard

From the collection of pieces you’ve spotted, you might see a clear colour palette forming already. But if not, we think making 2 or 3 colour themed mood boards is a great way to explore different options.

This can be done the old fashioned way by cutting up home style magazines and collecting fabric and wallpaper samples from retailers.

Or you can take to Pinterest, where the world of interior design style is at your fingertips. Our own Pinterest boards make a fantastic starting point.

  1. Accessories

Buying accessories might seem like the last thing to do when redecorating but hear us out.

Now that you've got an idea of your style and colour scheme, we suggest testing the waters with accessories.

You could even keep these accessories on display in the corner of your home and see how they make you feel after a couple of days or weeks looking at them. You might find that you really hate bold geometric patterns after all!

  1. Take the Plunge

If you've taken your time with each of these steps, you've hopefully been able to decide on a decorating style. Now it's time to take the plunge and choose the pieces that best suit the look you're aiming for.

What you paint, re-wallpaper or buy first will depend on the room you’re decorating and ultimately, your personal preference.

For example, if you want a bold sofa, it would be wise to pick this first then choose everything else afterwards. But if you know you want a dark, moody dining room, you might pick the wall colour first.
