You will spend almost a third of your life in bed, so choosing the perfect mattress is an important decision that you shouldn't be taken lightly. By taking the time to do your research, you are much more likely to find a mattress you love and you can enjoy a good night’s sleep night after night.

Unfortunately, there isn’t one kind of mattress that suits everyone and as a result, there are thousands to choose from. Trying to find one that you like (and even worse – one that your partner likes too) can be overwhelming but our guide to choosing the perfect mattress will help you with your search.

When you start mattress shopping, the first thing to do is to narrow down your search by the type of mattress. There are five main types to choose from so it’s important to understand the differences between each of them.

Type 1: Pocket Sprung

Pocket sprung mattresses are made from individual springs which are housed in their own pocket of fabric. The springs are able to move independently, responding to your every moment and providing plenty of supportive comfort. Pocket sprung mattresses are perfect for two people because the springs can move independently of each other. They can cater for your different weights and you are less likely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements.

Type 2: Open Coil

An open coil (or open spring) mattress contains lots of individual springs that are linked together to form a grid. They are light mattresses that are easy to turn but they do tend to be less supportive. Another downfall of open coil mattresses is the springs move as one, so you might be disturbed by your partner’s movements. Open coil mattresses are perfect for a guest bedroom or child’s room, where they are used occasionally or will need replacing regularly anyway.

Type 3: Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses react to your body’s temperature and mould to your body. They support your body from all angles, so they are great for maintaining posture and keeping your spine aligned when sleeping on your side. Many types of memory foam mattress have a layer of memory foam on top of springs, so you get the pressure relief of the memory foam but the responsiveness of the springs, so turning and moving is easier than if it was a solid foam mattress.

Type 4: TEMPUR

Although TEMPUR is a specific brand rather than a type of mattress, their mattresses are so unique that they can’t really be put into a broader category. TEMPUR material has an open cell structure, resulting in billions of supporting points that are able to absorb your body’s weight and completely relieve pressure. This means you can enjoy a supportive but luxuriously comfortable night’s sleep where you won’t find yourself tossing and turning to relieve pressure on painful joints. TEMPUR offer four collections, each with a distinct feel, so there’s something to suit everyone.

Perfect for: people with aches

Type 5: Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses are one of the pricier choices but they’re arguably the most durable because of the way the material instantly springs back into shape. Latex is especially breathable so it’s a great choice for those who get hot in the night.

A latex mattress is ideal for an allergy sufferer because dust mites are unable to live inside them.Perfect for: those with dust mite allergies
